Brett Ratner’s “Hercules” is gearing up to go into production this year, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson set to star as the title character. The script is penned by newcomer Ryan Condal and is based off the graphic novel “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” written by Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya.

Some plot details have been gathered based on this information. The story is going to be a much darker take than the last Disney interpretation. The story will follow Hercules as a tormented mortal followed by death and destruction. He finds other men and women like himself with a taste for killing. Soon the King of Thrace hires Hercules and his group to train the King’s army.

Recent additions to the cast include Ian Mcshane (“Deadwood”), Rufus Sewell (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”), Joseph Fiennes (“Shakespeare in Love”), John Hurt (“Immortals”) and Aksel Hennie (“Headhunters”).

With an interesting cast and a first-time writer, it will be interesting to see how this new Hercules turns out. Will it capture a dark brooding anti hero similar to “The Dark Knight”? Or will it be a less inspired retelling similar to “Robin Hood” or “Wrath of the Titans”. Only time will truly tell. Either way this movie will most likely be entertaining on some level!

“Hercules” is set to hit theaters July 25th 2014.
