Star Wars Arcade (1983)

When home consoles hit a tremendous slump in the 80’s, gamers were getting their fix at local arcades, and one of the best arcades games of all time (in this humble writer’s opinion) is the Star Wars Arcade game. While the game was around in stand up form, the true magic lies with the sit-down version. The second you sat down in this machine, you immediately felt like a legit X-wing fighter pilot and your surroundings seemed to disappear as you blasted your way past TIE fighters and Lord Vader himself in an attempt to destroy the Death Star. I actually played this while on vacation when I was 6 (a few years after its release) and ended up being physically dragged away from the arcade because of my immediate addiction. You played as Luke Skywalker, or “Red Five” (with the guidance of Obi-Wan Kenobi) through three phases of the game, with the last resulting in the destruction of the Death Star, and then you would repeat the process, only each time you started over, the game would increase in difficulty to an infuriatingly hard degree.
