In an official announcement on StarWars.com, The principal cast of ‘Star Wars Episode VII’ has been officially revealed. In addition to the original trilogy stars reprising their roles, including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker, the new cast members destined to continue the saga are John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow.
This announcement is sure to only fuel the speculation infernos of fans about what sort of characters the new actors will play and what sort of story they will tell. Of particular interest is the casting of performance capture legend Andy Serkis (‘The Lord of the Rings’, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’) and Max von Sydow (‘What Dreams May Come’, ‘The Exorcist’).
J.J. Abrams, Writer/Director/Producer, had this to say on StarWars.com about the new and old cast; “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”
But can Abrams’ cast and crews’ best be enough? If there’s one thing nerds harbor most dearly, it’s their understandings and expectations of the universes, characters and stories that they love so much. With the recent announcement that the extended universe fans have been investing in for four decades is going to be comprehensively rewritten, delivering something that Star Wars fans will be proud of and just as happy with is a tall order. There’s still a year and a half for us to see how the movie shapes up. Fans will surely make their opinions known when ‘Episode VII’ debuts in theaters December 18th, 2015.
