The 2013 remake of “Carrie” is described as “a reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.” Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of Carrie earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. How will the remake compare to the original?

The panel started off with a look at the first teaser for “Carrie”. The trailer shows a wide view of the city at night, as the camera pans down the street. There is destruction everywhere: a building is burning, cars are on fire. Various character voiceovers talking about Carrie and the tragedy, saying things like, “It was definitely supernatural” and “She wasn’t a monster. She was just a girl.” The camera focuses on a blood-drenched girl in the middle of the chaos. Carrie looks into the camera, and it cuts to the title.

The panel was introduced, and included director Kimberly Peirce, Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie White), Julianne Moore (Margaret White), and producer Kevin Misher.

Moretz told the crown that being drenched in blood was fun at first, but after a while it became sticky and wet and it was a chilly 40-degrees.“The blood became part of the character, and I got used to it,” adds Moretz.

Producer Kevin Misher explained that the destruction in the remake will be on a bigger scope than the previous film. The book included more damage than the original film, which is now possible to show because of technological advances.

Director Kimberly Peirce explained: “Brian [De Palma] set a lot in motion by making a fantastic motion. I didn’t take anything from his movie. It was really reading Stephen King’s fantastic novel, thinking, “my god this is such a fantastic story that needs to be brought to life in a modern telling.” She goes to explain how they had to do about 50 test dumps of blood to figure out how much they should use. The total amount of fake blood in the film came out to around 1000 gallons.
