Since its launch last August, Disney Infinity has proven to be a success to the tune of 3 million units sold. The starter packs, which sell for 74.99 each, have steadily sold numbers for Disney Interactive and have hoisted Disney Infinity to the number 10 spot for best-selling game of 2013, according to the NPD group. It has even been able to contend the more established toy-based game franchise, Skylanders, which came in at number 3 for 2013′s bestselling franchise. Although Skylanders has more cache with the general consumer, the month of December showed the timeless power of Disney, with Skylanders Swap Force selling 597,000 units and Disney Infinity closing in with 551,000 units.

Speaking to the New York Times, President of Disney Interactive, Jimmy Pitaro stated, “We believe we’ve set the stage for Infinity to be an enduring video game platform.” The numbers reflect this with a huge financial turnaround in the Interactive division. In the last quarter of 2012, the operating income of Interactive was a huge loss of $76 million, whereas the end of 2013 saw a profit of $16 million. With Disney Infinity already sitting at a solid install base of 3 million units, 2014 could easily continue the upward trajectory of the division.
