Has the Wii U version of Watch Dogs Been Cancelled?
Amidst speculation that Ubisoft has quite possibly cancelled the Wii U version of their upcoming action adventure game, Watch Dogs, a company representative speaking to CVG has said, “We have nothing to comment [on] at the moment.” This statement comes after the news that the Italian branch of the popular gaming retailer GameStop has begun cancelling pre-orders of the Wii U version of the game. Speaking with GameStop Italy’s customer services Joystiq has since confirmed that in regards to Wiitalia’s original report, “This information is wrong, tomorrow the reservation[s] of Watch Dogs will restart.”
Rumor of the games possible cancellation appeared after Wiitalia reported that, “Last week, [one of] our reader[s] received a call from a GameStop employee, saying that his previously preordered copy of Watch Dogs for Wii U was not going to be offered; therefore, our reader was advised to move the preorder to another game. Asking for reasons, the employee told him that Ubisoft scrapped this version.”
In a recent interview with CVG, Watch Dogs’ creative director Jonathan Morin said that the Wii U version showed a lot of promise and that it actually looked superior to both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 versions. “I would say the Wii U version is pretty much in between what the current gen is and what the next gen is from a version standpoint. It’s hard to position it. I would tend to say it’s maybe a bit closer to current gen than next gen for certain things but it’s a beautiful game on Wii U and it’s cool to play it just on the GamePad.”
As it stands Watch Dogs is coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC and Wii U sometime in the spring. We will update you on this story as we learn more.
UPDATE: The cancellation process was due to a glitch in the system at a GameStop location. All should be resolved.
