Supergirl has received a lot attention lately with her new live action TV show. As the biological cousin and female counterpart to DC Comic’s super iconic Superman, Supergirl (real name: Kara Zor-El) had some super-sized shoes to walk in. She’s been around since 1959, but has never reached the enormous popularity of her male cousin, which is why it’s extra awesome that she now has a chance to be in the spotlight for a whole new generation and an expanded audience.
Cosplayer Maid of Might has teamed up with Saffels Photography to create amazing cosplay art. Here, she wears the costume of pre-New 52 Supergirl, a cute and sporty cropped top and kicky skirt. Kara Zor-El has basically the same powers as her more famous cousin, and, like so many comic book characters, has had her backstory tweaked or rebooted multiple times through the years. She was even killed off in the 1980’s, during the Infinite Crisis timeline, but was reintroduced (as a relative of Superman) in 2004. At times she may even appear to be more powerful than Superman, though that’s explained by how Superman’s morals compel him to rein in his power to keep from harming innocent bystanders. Kara is more likely to unleash her powers to the fullest.
The work that Maid of Might and Saffels Photography have done is amazing. Maid of Might looks as though she’s stepped straight from the pages; a living version of Michael Turner’s art. Saffles Photography captures that all so well. There is beauty, strength and sweetness here, plus a perfect swish of cape. Awesome.
