In certain games, do you ever get so annoyed with particular beasts/monsters that you wish developers would just cut them out? Well, in the latest Final Fantasy installment, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, you can do that, sort of. When you begin this action RPG, all monsters you come across are given a pre-determined number. What this means, is that every time you kill one of these monsters, you’re one step closer to causing them to go extinct–unless you restart the game, of course. The game’s design director, Yuji Abe, just recently confirmed this, and explained that when you chip away at the creatures’ population, you’ll eventually be left with ‘The Last One’. The Last One, won’t be such a walk in the park to take down.

The last remaining one of each species will always become much, much harder to kill. But, killing The Last One of each species will get you rare items. When players beat this installment on Normal, they’ll automatically unlock a Hard Mode. If players decide to take on The Last One on Hard Mode, the beasts will drop much more valuable items once defeated. Aside from that, there will also be Hard Mode exclusive items sold in shops. Abe has also confirmed that without skipping any cut scenes, the game should take about 50 hours to complete. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is set to release next February 11th, 2014 for the Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.
