It’s been circulating through the rumor mill for months, and now it’s official: Rian Johnson (Looper) will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. Disney’s CEO Robert Iger broke the news to shareholders today that Episode VIII will release on May 26, 2017 — which is just over 40 years after the release of the first Star Wars movie, Star Wars: A New Hope.

According to StarWars.com the film will follow after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The report goes on to say the following about Rian Johnson:

“Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.”

With Star Wars: Episode VII details still hard to come by, it will likely be some time before we know more about Episode VIII.

Stay tuned for more Star Wars news as it breaks!
