Watchers of The View, were recently treated to an intriguing announcement from the comic and movie producing titan, Marvel. Thor, the Asgardian God of Thunder is getting a female incarnation in a new Marvel Comic Book.

Marvel certainly could create a believable transformation of Thor into a female. And of course there is Mjolnir, The mighty hammer that can only be wielded by Thor, unless that right is taken away from him. We’ll have to wait and see exactly how the right transfers between the old Thor and this new character who takes up the mantle.

The View makes it sound as though the old Thor falls from grace in some way. Again, can’t know for sure yet, but the co-host Jenny McCarthy had a bit more explanation: “The story behind her is that she created herself. She was saved by Thor, and she came down from Earth – followed him – and made herself look like Thor. And now she’s taking over.”

That seems…..simplistic. Undoubtedly there is more to the story. Marvel would do well not to haphazardly handle such an important transformation with such a recognizable character, especially since many expect that this Comic Book change will eventually be incorporated into the Marvel cinematic universe in some fashion, perhaps by the time The Avengers 3 starts to take shape. Hopefully, Marvel will reveal more illustrations and story details in the weeks ahead.

The announcement from Marvel provides some context to the new heroine’s story line.

“This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
