A young princess is on a journey to stop her sister, who has magical freezing powers, when she turns the kingdom into an eternal winter in Disney’s “Frozen.” Featuring the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel as the two sisters, Anna and Elsa, “Frozen” uses the first half of the movie setting the premise up, dating back to when the two girls were just kids and slowly moving to the day the older sister, Elsa will become the new queen. This first half of the movie, which was directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, is also where most of the wonderful songs take place. From sad to defiant, the songs move the story along nicely and will be stuck in your head for days.

On the day of the big ceremony, Anna is so excited to be outside the castle walls, she even meets a prince who she becomes engaged to. Elsa, the new queen, becomes so enraged by this that she curses the entire kingdom and moves into an icy palace on the top of a mountain. Anna decides that she must talk some sense into Elsa so she heads out leaving behind her new love, but along the way she meets some new friends. An ice block seller, his reindeer and a snowman who is voiced by Josh Gad.

The twists throughout the story will be surprising to adult viewers, however, younger kids may not understand or care about the plot developments. That is the one thing that Jennifer Lee’s script may have wrong with it. The film seems a bit plot-heavy, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing unless you are making a children’s movie. Disney classics have always had interesting plots and dark undertones, take “The Lion King” for example, however that movie had colorful characters and probably wasn’t as boring to younger viewers as I’m afraid “Frozen” might be. It’s kind of a double-edged sword to write a script like this for an animated film’s age demographic because questions arise. For instance, is the story new and interesting as a whole? Absolutely. Is it going to be a hard sit for youngsters? That depends on your child’s tolerance level for people talking.

Overall, the songs, the female empowerment message (the prince doesn’t always have to come to the rescue), and twists to a children’s movie make it a good movie. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this movie win a ton of animated awards and I encourage you to get there on time because the short before the movie is very well done and gets you right back into a Walt Disney mood.
