An Esquire interview with Kate Mara, who will be playing Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman, in the upcoming 20th Century Fox and Marvel reboot of the Fantastic Four, has some news about the production of the film that might get fans knickers in a twist. According to her, the rumored changes to the source material might be a bit more fundamental in nature than what long time comic fans would like.
“I’ve never been a fan of comics, I’ve never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions.”
Whoah boy.
You hear that?
Ya?
That is the sound of a thousand angry fans heading this way.
Before anybody gets out the torch and pitch forks, let me take this opportunity to argue against the knee-jerk, “they changed it now it sucks” reaction. This doesn’t necessarily mean that whatever new storyline the filmmakers may create is going to be bad. In fact, it doesn’t even mean that absolutely nothing in terms of narrative form the comics will find its way into the film. Also there have already been two Fantastic Four films within the last decade, so some new takes on these characters on the big screen would do well to make the film distinct. Especially when those previous films still make many fans wince at the mere mention. We’ll just have to wait and see how the story and characters shape up in this new vision of this famous superhero team.
The new Fantastic Four Movie is still due in theaters June 19th, 2015.
