"Game of Thrones" Season 2 Recap

“Game of Thrones” Season 2 Recap

Welcome to our “Game of Thrones” Season Two Recap! Season three of the popular HBO series begins next Sunday, so we thought it would be best to recap what has happened during the last two seasons of “Game of Thrones” in preparation for the premiere! Hopefully you read our season one recap last week. If not, take a few moments and read it, then dive into season 2!

The season begins with a tournament at the Red Keep in honor of King Joffrey’s nameday; Sansa Stark is sitting next to Joffrey and is still considered his betrothed despite her family’s war against the Lannisters. Joffrey orders his knights to fight to the death, but the tournament is stopped when Joffrey’s uncle and Ceresei’s brother, Tyrion Lannister, arrives at the Red Keep. Tyrion tells Joffrey he has been appointed the Hand of the King while his father, Tywin Lannister, fights against the Starks; Ceresei is furious at this news. Tyrion settles into his new quarters with his secret mistress, Shae, a prostitute he met while battling Robb Stark’s army. Tyrion tells Shae her identity must be kept secret because there are those in King’s Landing that will harm her if they find out about her relationship with Tyrion. Unfortunately, Tyrion learns Varys knows about Shae, but Varys swears he will not tell anyone about Shae. In order to keep Shae busy and out of trouble, Tyrion has Varys appoint her as Sansa Stark’s handmaiden.

Meanwhile, Robb Stark antagonizes his prisoner, Jamie Lannister, by telling Jamie he knows Jamie is Joffrey’s father and Ned Stark was killed to protect this secret. Robb plans to have peace terms sent to the Lannisters in exchange for Jamie’s life. Knowing the Lannisters will never come to terms, Robb’s friend and ally, Theon Greyjoy, tells Robb they will need ships to conquer King’s Landing, and Theon can give him ships from his father, Balon Greyjoy. Robb allows Theon to go home to the Iron Islands to obtain the Greyjoy allegiance and their ships. Robb then sends his mother, Catelyn, to make a deal with Renly Baratheon, Joffrey’s uncle and brother to the deceased King Robert. Renly is fighting for the Iron Throne as well, and Robb believes the two families should come together to make a deal and fight against the Lannisters as a joint force.
