It’s no secret that Super Mario Maker is brimming with Mario content and cameos. But as we get closer to the game’s release (this Friday to be specific), we’ve seen 8-bit cameos of other various characters, including Donkey Kong, Link, and even third part characters like Sonic and Pac-Man. So it makes sense that Nintendo’s recent online shooter Splatoon would be getting a cameo as well in the game.

In a new video courtesy of the official Japanese Nintendo YouTube channel, we see Mario turning into an Inkling Girl via the Mystery Mushroom. Like the other 8-bit characters, Inkling Girl gets a unique animation when the player presses down. But what sets her apart from other transformations is that pressing down will turn her into a squid now and enable her to slide across the ground, which is not only really neat, but also fits what happens in the game. But what makes it even cooler (as the video shows), is that when the Inkling Girl goes into an underwater sections, she transforms into a squid and swims around. A nice touch if I do say so myself.

You’ll be able to channel your inner squid/kid in a recreation of World 1-1 when Super Mario Maker releases exclusively on the Wii U on September 11th.
