In the midst of a zombie renaissance, developer Techland is looking to shake the formula up with its ambitious open world survival title, Dying Light. Appearing on the PlayStation Blog this morning, a new trailer was showcased with an ominous narration over bits of gameplay. Unlike most zombie titles, Dying Light is aiming to make the choice of mowing down hordes of undead more ambiguous and coupled with a parkour traveling system, this game just might deliver a truly unique experience.

Like many works of contemporary zombie fiction, the cause of the living dead is an ‘epidemic’ much like the flu. Taking place a few short weeks after the outbreak, you will navigate through Harran, a city in the midst of quarantine. Along with attempting to gather supplies and help whoever you can, it is crucial to try to get back before nightfall, when the zombies become extremely aggressive. Unlike the other usual zombie tropes, however, Dying Light appears to take a more cerebral approach about indiscriminate killing. Via the PlayStation Blog, Techland producer Tymon Smektala wrote, “We’ve gotten accustomed to mindless zombie killing, right?” He continued, “no matter what the medium, zombies became the cannon fodder of our times. After all, no one should bat an eye at taking down thousands of already dead, walking corpses. Or should they? In Dying Light, we make things a bit more complicated.”

He stresses that the player should be mindful of who exactly you are killing, not what. “In the quarantine zone, the line between the infected and the sane is very thin.” Reminding the gamer that these survivors and infected all used to be normal just months earlier, Smektala concludes with, “imagine that in order to stay alive, you could be forced to shoot your family doctor, chop a colleague from your office to pieces, or leave your best friend for certain death.” Dying Light will launch in late 2014 for PS3, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
