Has “The Amazing Spider-Man” Found a New Mary Jane?

Casting is underway for the second installment in “The Amazing Spider-Man” trilogy, and some familiar characters will be joining the fun.

One major addition will be Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s main love interest. According to Variety, Shailene Woodley is the current favorite to get the role. Woodley stars on the ABC Family series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”, and received a Golden Globe nod last year for her performance in “The Descendants”, opposite George Clooney.

In Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” films, Mary Jane, played by Kirsten Dunst, was Peter Parker’s one true love. “The Amazing Spider-Man” focused on a love interest that was less familiar, casting Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.

Andrew Garfield will return as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Emma Stone will most likely return as Gwen Stacy, and Marc Webb will once again direct. In addition to a new Mary Jane Watson, the search is also on for a young actor to play Harry Osborn, the role previously played by James Franco. Electro is rumored to be in consideration as the primary villain for the sequel.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on May 2, 2014.
