All That’s Retro Cosplay Edition: Cheetara from Thundercats!
The only adult female ThunderCat and a powerful warrior who’s character is based off its’ feline counterpart, Cheetara has incredible speed and combat skills and achieves top speeds of even a mile per thirty seconds. Let’s just say, she’s the Flash Gordon of the group.
She also has an ability called her “Sixth Sense”, which gives her the ability to see into past and future events. At times, Cheetara considers this a curse, due to it being very taxing on herself, but these visions could come at random and when she forced them to appear, it could take days or weeks for her to recover. She could also sense danger to others which she attributed to “woman’s intuition”. Cheetara had a fondness for the “useless” metal gold. Her primary weapon was the baton or bo staff, which could extend to any length and shoot out energy beams and was attached to a cuff on her off-hand when not in use.
Now, for those of you who don’t know, the ThunderCats have been around for ages. It debuted in 1985 and ran until 1989, and was considered the biggest animated series for its time. Today, the show remains as popular as it was when it first started all thanks to its huge fan following. Cheetara, is the only adult female ThunderCat and is based off the cheetah, but with a few added extras, such as an anthropomorphic humanoid physique and Amazonian build. She commonly wears a bright orange leotard with the ThunderCats logo emblazoned on the bosom.
Before Cheetara left the doomed planet of Thundera, Cheetara was instructed by Jaga to wake Lion-O from sleep, which she did successfully despite the objections of Snarf. When Mutants attempted to board their ship, Cheetara joined the other ThunderCats and bravely fought them off. She was given a new outfit and her Staff to help defend herself on their new home by Jaga, along with her fellow ThunderCats. She helped defend the ship from the attacking Mutants, going into suspension to make the journey to the new planet chosen as the ThunderCats new home. She was then revived with the others when they reached their new home on Third Earth, and after defeating the Mutants, prepared with the others to build a new home.
British cosplayer Shirak-Cosplay is a pretty remarkable cosplayer. She’s brought to life characters such as Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice, Graverobber from Repo the Genetic Opera, and my personal favourite, Pris the Mark 6 replican from Ridley Scott’s 1982 dystopian sci-fi. Now, she’s brought to life the powerful and strong Cheetara from Thundercats. It’s a cosplay that is simple, yet so effective and so well put together. Shirak-Cosplay has brought to life characters from not just anime and video games, but movies from the 1980’s and 90’s that we love so much and that hold a very special place in our hearts, and the cosplays she’s done are absolutely amazing. To that, I bow down deeply.
